Lip Flip for Men: What It Does, What to Expect

Lip Flip for Men: What It Does, What to Expect

A lip flip is a tiny dose of botulinum toxin placed along the upper lip. It relaxes the muscle around the mouth so the upper lip rolls outward slightly. It does not add volume. For most men the result is a subtle change: a little more visible pink, a softer line, a less tight look when you smile. It wears off in weeks to a few months, so it suits men who want a gentle change and accept that it is modest.

This guide covers what the treatment does, who it suits, what can go wrong, and the questions to ask before anyone goes near your face. We are a men's skin clinic in Liverpool, and we will be plain about where a lip flip helps and where it doesn't.

TL;DR

  • A lip flip uses a few units of botulinum toxin to relax the muscle around the upper lip, so the lip rolls out slightly. It adds no volume.
  • Effects usually show within 3 to 7 days, peak at about 2 weeks and last roughly 8 to 12 weeks, according to a 2025 Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology paper.
  • Men usually want definition and natural proportion, not a pout. The plan has to respect masculine anatomy.
  • In the UK, botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine. Check who is injecting and what they are using.
  • Lip flip is not on our published treatment list. Our anti-wrinkle injections start at £200 for 2 areas.

What a lip flip actually does

The muscle that circles your mouth is called the orbicularis oris. When it is active, it pulls the upper lip slightly inward and downward, especially when you smile. A lip flip places a very small amount of toxin at points along the upper lip border. The muscle loosens, and the lip turns outward a little.

According to research published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, a typical dose is 4 to 8 units. That is far smaller than the doses used for frown lines or the forehead.

The key point is that nothing is added. Filler adds volume. A lip flip changes how the existing lip sits. That is why a 2026 study in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery stresses that patients who expect filler-like results are the ones most likely to be disappointed.

Lip flip, filler or lip lift?

Three treatments get lumped together. They solve different problems.

The lip filler route is a different conversation, and for men it needs a restrained hand. If you want to understand how filler works first, read our guide to dermal filler treatment.

Why men ask about it

Men who search for a lip flip, or for answers about a thin upper lip, usually describe one of a few things:

  • The upper lip vanishes when they smile, leaving just a line.
  • The lip looks tight or pulled in, which can make a face look stern or tired.
  • Age has thinned the lips and softened the edge of the upper lip.
  • They are having other treatments, such as anti-wrinkle injections, and want the lower face to look balanced.

None of these needs fixing. If you are happy with how you look, leave it alone. But if it bothers you, a lip flip is one of the least invasive ways to test a small change.

Men are not women with thinner lips

Aesthetic experts note that male patients tend to want subtle structural definition rather than a fuller, rounder pout. The injection plan needs to respect masculine facial anatomy so the smile does not end up looking feminised.

In practice that means a practitioner should look at your whole face first. A strong jaw and a wide mouth carry a different upper lip from a narrow face. Fewer units, placed conservatively, usually look better than a bold first attempt. You can add later. You can't take it back.

Our article on what "natural looking" means in aesthetics explains how we think about that.

What to expect: the timeline

The timeline below follows the figures in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology review. Individual results vary.

  1. Appointment. The injections themselves take minutes. Expect a few small pinpricks along the upper lip.
  2. First days. Some swelling, numbness or tenderness is common and mild. Avoid rubbing or pressing the area.
  3. Days 3 to 7. The effect begins to show.
  4. Around 2 weeks. The result peaks. This is the point to judge it, not day two.
  5. 8 to 12 weeks. The effect fades as the toxin wears off. It can last somewhat longer in some people.

One search that comes up often is when the treatment stops feeling strange. Because the muscle that controls your mouth is partly relaxed, you may notice small functional changes. Drinking through a straw, whistling, pronouncing certain sounds or eating can feel odd. These are generally mild and temporary, and they ease as the product fades. Men who play wind instruments, sing, or speak publicly for work should raise this before treatment.

How long does a lip flip last?

Shorter than most people hope. The doses are small, so the effect fades faster than the 3 to 4 months typical for frown lines or forehead lines. Plan on roughly 8 to 12 weeks. If you want to see how toxin duration works in general, our article on how long Botox lasts in men goes through it.

There is a flip side that matters. If something doesn't feel right, you can't reverse the toxin. Any functional side effect lasts until it wears off. This is why practitioner skill and choosing the right patient matter more than the dose itself.

Risks and side effects

Most problems after a lip flip are minor and short-lived: swelling, tenderness, small bruises, numbness, and awkwardness with straws or certain sounds. Rarer risks include asymmetry or a droopy look if the product spreads to nearby muscles. A badly placed dose can also affect your smile or how you drink and speak until it fades.

See your injector first if something feels wrong. Seek urgent medical help if you develop difficulty swallowing, breathing or speaking, or widespread weakness, after any toxin injection.

Unlicensed products are a real UK issue

In the UK, botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine. That is not a technicality. A UK Health Security Agency report describes 25 botulism cases identified in June 2025 among people who had cosmetic injections of botulinum toxin products in North East England. The case-control study found cases were more likely to have attended two specific practitioners. The research summary also notes that unlicensed products tested at higher potency than their labels claimed.

A cheap price, an unfamiliar brand or a practitioner who is vague about the product are all warning signs. Ask these before you book:

  • Who is the prescriber, and what are their registration and qualifications?
  • Which product will be used, and is it a licensed UK product?
  • Is there a proper consultation and medical history before any treatment?
  • What is the plan if something goes wrong, and who do I contact?

Managing expectations before you book

This is the part that decides whether you are pleased. The 2026 Aesthetic Plastic Surgery paper describes clear pre-treatment counselling as the most important factor in preventing regret. Worth noting: that study had 17 women, so its figures don't map straight on to men. The principle still applies.

Before you commit, be honest about what you want:

  • Want a visibly fuller lip? A lip flip won't do it. Filler might, but only with enough lip tissue to work with, and only conservatively on a man.
  • Want a better smile line? A lip flip may help a little, but a good practitioner will also look at your teeth, gums and the length of your upper lip.
  • Bothered by how much gum or tooth you show? The cause could be dental. A dentist can explain smile makeover options in Liverpool alongside what an injector can do.
  • Bothered by lines around the mouth? That is a different treatment plan from a lip flip.

If a practitioner promises a dramatic change from a lip flip, treat it as a red flag.

Thin upper lip: what else can be done

A thin upper lip in a man can come from genetics, ageing, smoking, sun damage or weight loss. A lip flip addresses only one narrow part of it. Others include:

  • Filler, where there is enough tissue and a skilled, conservative injector. Harley Academy's guidance on thin lips notes that practitioners should first establish whether a patient is suitable, since thin lips often also lack support from surrounding structures.
  • Surgical lip advancement. For a very thin upper lip, plastic surgeons describe lip advancement in the very thin upper lipped male when filler has too little vermilion to expand.
  • Skin quality work. Skin around the mouth shows age. Better skin texture can make the whole area look fresher without changing lip shape.

Perspective: how we see it

We treat men only, so we see the same pattern often. A man comes in worried about one feature, and the better answer is a balanced plan for the whole face. Lips are no different.

Our view is simple. Subtle beats obvious. Most men who want treatment want to look like themselves on a good week, not like they have had work done. A lip flip fits that only if the expectation is small and the practitioner is careful.

Lip flip is not on our published treatment list, so we won't pretend it is. What we do offer is anti-wrinkle treatment for men, planned around male anatomy, and an honest conversation about what suits your face. If a lip flip is the wrong tool, we would rather tell you than sell you something.

Questions to ask yourself first

  1. What exactly bothers me: the lip shape, the smile, the lines, or the teeth?
  2. Would I be happy with a change that only a close friend would notice?
  3. Can I accept a few weeks of awkward drinking or speaking if it happens?
  4. Am I fine with it wearing off in a couple of months?
  5. Do I trust the person and the product?

If you answer yes to the middle three and you are confident about the fifth, a lip flip is a reasonable thing to discuss. If not, wait.

FAQ

Does a lip flip change your smile?

Yes, slightly. Relaxing the muscle lets the upper lip roll out, so more of the lip shows when you smile and the lip is less likely to disappear. The change is subtle. A badly judged dose can alter the smile in an unwanted way until it wears off.

How much does a lip flip usually cost?

Prices vary by clinic, the practitioner and the dose, so we won't quote a range we can't source. Lip flip is not on our own price list. Our anti-wrinkle injections are £200 for 2 areas and £240 for 3 areas, and you can see them on our services page.

Can a lip flip make a thin upper lip look fuller?

Only a little, and only by changing how the lip sits. It adds no volume, so a genuinely thin lip stays thin. If volume is the goal, filler or a surgical option is the route, and a practitioner should assess suitability first.

When does a lip flip stop feeling weird?

The odd feeling when drinking, speaking or eating usually eases as the toxin starts to fade, and mild effects generally settle within weeks. It can't be reversed, so the sensations last as long as the product does. If it is severe or you have trouble swallowing or breathing, get medical help.
